As a writer, the bulk of my daydreams are about the worlds I weave for my books. Some of my most relaxing moments are just sitting in my La-Z-Boy, immersing myself completely in the sights and sound and smells of that magical place, where ever it might be. Even if the real world is ratcheting up the tension, I can de-stress in an instant simply by closing my eyes and following my characters into their adventures.
As a reader, all it takes is a skilled wordsmith with a flair for storytelling and I’m off visiting far-off lands and ancient times. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen into a great book only emerge hours later wondering how much time has passed. Unless I then discover I’m late for something, LOL, that’s a blissful moment. To be transported. Sigh. That’s what my book budget is really for.
I don’t do much spontaneous daydreaming. To be honest, I feel like I’m living my dream. But I do tend to surround myself with paintings and pictures of peaceful places I’d love to dive into.
Calendars of Scottish castles, paintings of houses in the autumn, pictures of winding country roads. A few images of the stars… And yes, some clear blue water and white sand scenes. They have the power to make me forget, just for a second, the phone bill and the laundry pile. Some days, that’s exactly what I need.

Well, as I mentioned yesterday, I’m day dreaming about building my own house. Sometimes while in bed I will plan out the place, move furniture in (and out), set up floor-to-ceiling bookshelves (and fill them!), add a conservatory, or a hot tub, or both. My house will have an ocean view, so I won’t have a great deal of landscaping (beyond rocks, that is), but there will be several levels of decks. :sigh: Now I just need to win that lottery!

It’s my favorite place to sit, stare at the water or up at the wide Florida sky, and either brainstorm plot points or lose myself in wistful yearnings - usually involving castles set on wild rocky landscapes and my burning need for another vacation across the pond!

I know what you mean about not spontaneously daydreaming much. That lack is one of the reasons I so need camping vacations. By the end of two weeks hiking in Eastern Oregon, I can finally slow down enough to let my thoughts drift.
Yeah, I have to work to daydream
by Jessa Slade June 30th, 2009 at 8:58 pmI dream inside as well as out. Mostly while preparing for and going to work. It’s early in the morning and my surroundings are still reasonably quiet. I also just came out of a peaceful sleep so I easily slip into the daydream state of mind. When I cycle to work I find it soothing going round and round with my legs and soaring off in my mind.

I have a nice little routine set up for my work week - with daydreaming scheduled in! LOL, doesn’t make it very spontaneous but it sure is relaxing.
I have an hour every sunny afternoon (after work and my jog) where I lay out in the sun with two kitties and puppy and chill. Sometimes I am drawn into the wonderful paranormal worlds of the books I am reading and imagine what will happen next. Other times I let the sounds around me guide my thoughts.
Then my hubby comes home and it’s dinner time!

I daydream in the shower and on long walks with the dog. I don’t dream in the car, Kim, but I do talk out scenes. People who pass me on the road must think I’m nuts!
